Karachi(Cliff News)The Recovery house (TRH) – A project of Caravan of Life Pakistan Trust,  which works tirelessly in an aim to shift the focus on effective steps needed to combat mental illness in Pakistan, recently conducted a public awareness seminar on ‘Recovery from Mental Illness: Looking at the Roadblocks &Strengths’.The facilitator/expert speaker for this session was Dr. Veronica Carey (PhD, CPRP), Assistant Dean for Diversity and Student Affairs; Associate Clinical Professor at Drexel University – College of Nursing & Health Professions, USA.The seminar was attended by over 75 attendees which comprised mostly caregivers, people living with the illness or those belonging from other profession. These attendees interacted with the Dr. Veronica and exchanged their valuable thoughts along with highlighting the importance of having such sessions on a higher frequency in Pakistan.TRH brings experts in the field from the United States of America to Pakistan on frequent basis, both for training purposes and for conducting relevant seminars & conferences. With such efforts, TRH remains resolute to bring focus and attention of the people in Pakistan towards the essential precautions that are required to tackle with mental illnesses.Being highly strong-willed and welcoming the participants, Dr. Veronica Carey said, “The Mission of Psychiatric Rehabilitation is to help people with long-term psychiatric disabilities increase their functioning so that they are successful and satisfied in the environments of their choice, with the least amount of ongoing professional help.”“This is my fourth visit to Pakistan and the people here possess very strong skills to overcome any difficulty that comes their way, be it recovery from mental illness. The core principles of psychiatric rehabilitation is to convey hope and show respect, thus making everyone part of the cultural norms and working on their strengths,” she concluded, stressing on the key message of the seminar being “Recovery starts with you!”.Dr. Veronica thanked the attendees for supporting the recovery of their loved ones and expressed her desire to revisit Pakistan and host such seminars on a higher frequency.

10th Karachi Literature Festival programme and book prize shortlist announced

Karachi(Cliff News)The 10th Karachi Literature Festival (KLF), the country’s most anticipated literary event, is scheduled to be held on 1, 2, and 3 March 2019 at the Beach Luxury Hotel, Karachi. A vibrant programme of talks, interviews, panel discussions, readings, book launches, English poetry readings, Urdu mushaira, stand-up comedy, satire, author signings, performing arts, documentary screenings, book fair, and literary award have been lined up. With ideas and subjects as diverse as mental health, education, writing autobiographies, and pop culture being explored at the KLF, the event promises to be a literary and cultural feast.Arshad Saeed Husain, Managing Director, Oxford University Press (OUP), shared the programme highlights of the 10th KLF and announced the shortlisted books of the KLF–Infaq Foundation Urdu Literature Prize in a press conference held at the Arts Council of Pakistan.Speaking on the occasion, Arshad Saeed Husain said, “KLF is not just an event, but it’s a celebration of literature, books, reading, performing arts, culture and diversity. The festival will be used as a platform to explore the fundamental question ‘What’s going to happen to books, literature, publishing and reading in the future?’” He further added, “KLF is Oxford University Press’ heritage, and like every year we aim to bring forward its international and cosmopolitan flair through an exciting lineup of speakers, authors, book launches, English poetry readings, Urdu mushairas, satire, performing arts, and film screenings. Karachiites have a lot to look forward to over the coming two and a half days of literature, art, culture, dialogue, and debate.”This year, among the many events, the book launches will feature OUP titles: The Economy of Modern Sindh; The Begum: A Portrait of Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan; Pakistan’s Radioactive Decade; and Defiance of the Rose: Selected Poems of Perveen Shakir.This year also features a session with talented youth in ‘Nayee Nasl ki Awaz: Kal Hamara Hai’. The future focused sessions include: ‘The Karachi Dilemma: Conservation or Evolution’; ‘Urdu Theatre Kal, Aaj aur Kal’; ‘Pakistani Cinema: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’; ‘Publishing 2020 and Beyond: New Trends, Digitization and Technology’; and ‘Rethinking Education in the Fast-Changing World’. Five Pakistani documentaries featured in this year’s festival are: ‘City by the Sea: The Future of Karachi’s Coastline’; ‘Qalandar Code—Rise of the Divine Feminine’; ‘Indus Blues: Pakistani Folk Artists and Their Struggle to Keep a Fading Art Form Alive’ (Pakistan premiere); and ‘These Silences Are All the Words’. A short film about a Transgender Pakistani Woman titled ‘Rani’ will also be screened at the Festival.The KLF–Infaq Foundation Urdu Literature Prize of Rs 200,000 will be awarded to the best book of prose or poetry in Urdu. The books shortlisted for this prize include Northern Command by Sami Ahuja (published by Sanjh Publications); Qila-e-Faramoshi by Fahmida Riaz (published by Oxford University Press); Rooh-e-Qadeem ki Qasam by Sabir Zafar (published by Rang Adab Publications).The performance highlight of this year’s festival will be Qawwali by Hamza Akram and Brothers and Pepsi Battle of the Bands. Around 220 Pakistani and 15 international authors and speakers from ten countries will be participating. Deborah Baker and I.A. SECMC,IUCN for promotion of biodiversity conservation in Thar

Karachi(Cliff News)Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at jointly promoting conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity in Thar area.Syed Abul Fazal Rizvi, CEO SECMC and Ms. Aban Marker Kabraji, Regional Director IUCN Asia and Director, Regional Hub for Asia-Oceania, signed the MoU at a ceremony attended, amongst others, by a delegation of experts from the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), currently in Pakistan as part of a Special Policy Study on Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).CCICED is a high-level international organization hosted by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China and aims at strategic policies on greening the BRI and linking it with the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.The MoU will help implement robust environmental standards and promote nature conservation in the Thar region, through separate and joint initiatives. SECMC is currently working with the vision to develop and execute a technically and commercially viable coal mining project in Thar Block II in Sindh to bring energy security to Pakistan, based on indigenous Lignite resource while taking best possible measures to mitigate negative impacts on people and bio-diversity of Thar.In her capacity as the International Team leader of the Special Policy Study, Ms. Aban Marker Kabraj explained, “The Special Policy Study it is currently undertaking aims to identify the interaction between the green Belt and Road and the implementation of key environmental goals under the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, in order to lay the ground for decision-making and contribute to promoting green development on the Belt and Road.” She added that the presentation by SECMC was vital, in that “the primary reason for our delegation’s visit is to better understand the ongoing BRI investment projects in Pakistan. SECMC is playing a key role in addressing Pakistan’s energy needs, but it has also invested significantly in improving the socio-economic position of Thari communities. Perhaps even more importantly, it is one of the few companies which has aligned its social investments with the SDGs.”During his presentation, Syed Abul Fazal Rizvi, CEO SECMC said: “IUCN and SECMC wish to identify projects and activities for joint implementation from time to time through specific agreements in areas such as biodiversity conservation, environmental education, forestry, and mitigation of negative environmental impacts. We have already commenced a host of programs under the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to enhance growth and prosperity of the Thar region and through this partnership we are hopeful that we would be able to learn from the expertise of IUCN to further the impact of our programs.”The CCICED International Chief Senior Advisor & Former Director IISD, Mr. Art Hanson, stressed upon the fact that “Pakistan is the key stakeholder in its One Belt One Road project and getting a better understanding of China’s ongoing Belt and Road initiative (BRI) investment projects in Pakistan through the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), will ensure that socio-economic sustainability is met with environmental and ecosystem biodiversity”. SECMC Chinese partners under CPEC, built on this further, presenting the SPS objectives of assessing the local demand for sustainable development and achieving a greater understanding of the ongoing BRI investment projects in Pakistan.Mr. Javed Jabbar, former senator and founding member of Baahn Behli, applauded the efforts of SECMC and Thar Foundation; and said that “SECMC has made biodiversity and environmental conservation a priority while prioritizing the energy needs of the country. In a place like Thar, which has most often remained neglected, SECMC has done wonders in that area within a short span of time”.Mr. Mahmood Akhtar Cheema, Country Representative, IUCN Pakistan added that in addition to integrated development projects, CPEC also encompasses environment and biodiversity conservation along the route. To match this effort and become a collaborative partner on this front, IUCN is scaling up its work with governments, industry and civil society to ensure that biodiversity conservation and environmental issues are fast tracked into the mainstream initiative.
