Standard Chartered pioneers trade A1 engine in partnership with IBM

Singapore(Cliff News) Standard Chartered has officially launched the Trade AI Engine, a joint solution developed in partnership with IBM to enhance the client experience in trade document processing through increased operational efficiency and strengthened operational control. The industry-leading solution is currently live in key markets across Asia, Africa and the Middle East[1], with more markets across the Bank’s footprint to follow[2].Traditional documentary trade requires millions of data elements in paper-based, unstructured documents – often issued by various companies – to be reviewed through a largely manual process. With the implementation of the Trade AI Engine powered by IBM, this time-consuming and high-risk process is now significantly automated:

  • Conversion of non-digital shipping documents into machine-readable format enabled by Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

  • Identification and classification of document types from an initial pre-defined database

  • Continuous Machine learning (ML) based on user re-classification / re-defining of data elements to further improve accuracy

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities to read and capture context from data in the documents

 The innovative solution allows the Bank to handle high volumes of diverse back office tasks with greater efficiency and accuracy, thus offering a more seamless trade processing experience for clients.“As a market leader and major intermediary between buyers and sellers in the centre of global trade, we process more than 36 million pages of trade documents annually, with over 200 million data elements for name capture and processing,” said Lisa Robins, Global Head, Transaction Banking at Standard Chartered. “The Trade AI Engine significantly reduces the amount of time and effort in this review process while raising the bar on our controls environment, further enhancing our ability to play the connector role for our clients by facilitating transactions at pace with the growth of their businesses.”“Trade document processing traditionally relies on a high degree of manual effort to ensure transaction compliance. IBM worked with Standard Chartered Bank to develop a solution that would automate the retrieval of key information from text within scanned documents. Pakistani students win second prize in Huawei ICT competition

Karachi(Cliff News) The Huawei ICT Competition 2018-2019 Global Final, held under the theme of “Connection, Glory, Future”, has successfully concluded at Huawei’s Songshan Lake new campus in Dongguan, Guangdong province, China—one of the world’s leading high-tech hubs for global research & development.This year the team from Pakistan reached international recognition by taking home the second prize of the Practice Competition of the Network Track.Since last June the competition has attracted more than 100,000 students from over 1,600 colleges and universities in 61 countries. This year’s final has a total of 49 teams from 30 countries, with the greater Middle East region represented by teams from Bahrain, Lebanon, Iraq and Pakistan. Huawei hopes to transfer a cumulative of more than 700,000 ICT professionals to the industry by 2023.Through Huawei ICT Competition, Huawei aims to provide students with a platform to compete and exchange ideas in order to enhance their ICT knowledge, practical and application skills, and raise their innovation awareness. CDC again reduces it’s tariff structure

As the infrastructure backbone of Pakistan Capital Market, CDC’s main objective is to provide efficient and cost effective services to all its customers and promote ease of doing business. In line to this resolve, CDC has continued to pass on the benefits to market participants and general investors without compromising on its services. As part of the recent reduction, CDC has provided 100% waiver on Maintenance fee for such Sub-Account holders who also have Investor Accounts. Taking this initiative further in order to promote the growth of Pakistan’s corporate debt market, CDC has significantly reduced its annual fee for long-term redeemable securities by approximately 65%. Additionally, CDC has rationalized its tariff structure for next five years which also includes reduction in custody fee for the year 2019-20 and 2020-21 by 14% and 16% respectively.Commenting on this market supporting endeavor, Mr. Badiuddin Akber, CEO-CDC said that “This initiative was taken by CDC to give much needed relief and support to the market, especially the investing public. While CDC continues to reduce its tariff since its inception, we are targeting our efforts towards helping reduce the cost of doing business for market participants. AMI School to promote inclusive learning

Through this inter-professional collaboration, the teachers involved in the project have become highly skilled researchers and peer educators for their colleagues.On their panel is Dr Debbie Kramer-Roy, an occupational Therapist, Lecturer and works with AMI as a Project Coordinator. She is a passionate advocate for the rights of all children to high quality and inclusive education, and uses Action Research to develop the vision, knowledge and skills required to make this happen in real-world contexts. Debbie explains: “the teachers and occupational therapists involved in the project have developed a contextually appropriate approach to inclusive education and the Resource Guide that has been produced has the potential to spread the vision, knowledge and skills to schools across the country. A key learning point has been that inclusive teaching improves the learning experience and environment for all children in the school, demonstrating that inclusive education is an excellent approach to whole-school improvement”Working with its chief objective of expanding its scope of services, AMI plans to set up a model of an educational enterprise (Education Eco-System) which is not only unique in design but also aims to change the meaning of the term “expansion” in the context of education. Instead of using the present model of establishing more schools,  it proposes horizontal growth by developing supporting units to not only enhance the quality of education for students, teachers and parents but to initiate positive changes at the community level leading to meaningful changes in the social attitudes and behavior.The AMI School is committed to an education system built on this approach to accepting responsibility for all children to a welcoming and respectful environment. Karachi(Cliff News)In his keynote remarks delivered yesterday at the Potsdam Conference on National Cybersecurity in Berlin, Germany, Ken Hu, Deputy Chairman, Huawei said that in recent days, restrictions, based on ungrounded allegations, have been imposed on Huawei in order to disrupt our business operations. We believe this behavior is totally unjustified.Ken highlighted that in Europe, approximately three-quarters of smartphone users rely on an Android-based phone. Huawei accounts roughly for 20% of this market. Such reckless decisions can cause a great deal of harm to consumers and businesses in Europe.This sets a dangerous precedent. It goes against the values of the international business community, cuts off the global supply chain and disrupts fair competition in the market. This could happen to any other industry and company in the future if we don’t jointly confront these issues.I am honored to speak at this beautiful campus of the University of Potsdam. When I arrived earlier, I was told that we are at a historic site where the Berlin Wall once stood. This reminded me of the fact that we don’t want to see another wall and we don’t want to go through another painful experience.  Equally, we don’t want to build a new wall in terms of trade, we don’t want to build a new wall in terms of technology either. We need an integrated global ecosystem which can help us to promote faster technological innovation and stronger economic growth. Ultimately, it is what we have to rely on in order to maintain prosperity for human society.

Metro Cash and Carry Pakistan goes solar to reduce carbon emissions

Huawei reiterates company strong position despite recent actions by US

Karachi(Cliff News)In his latest meeting with the media, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei has reiterated that the company is in a strong position to move ahead despite recent political actions in the United States.Addressing questions about the impact of the White House’s recent executive order, Ren noted: “What the US will do is out of our control. To us, the most important thing is to do our job well. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the US companies that we work with. Over these 30 years, they have helped us to grow into what we are today. They have made many contributions to us. As you know, most of the companies that provide consulting services to Huawei are based in the US, including dozens of companies like IBM and Accenture. In the face of the recent crisis, I can feel these companies’ sense of justice and sympathy towards us.”The Huawei founder then went into greater detail about its relationships with US companies. “The US is a country ruled by law. US companies must abide by the laws, and so must the real economy. The media should understand that these US companies and Huawei share the same fate. We are both players in the market economy. Our close relationships with US companies are the result of several decades of effort on both sides. These relationships won’t be destroyed by a piece of paper from the US government.”The supply of products to Huawei from international partners was also discussed. “Our company will not end up with an extreme supply shortage. We have got well prepared. Even if there is an insufficient supply from our partners, we will face no problems. This is because we can manufacture all the high-end chips we need ourselves,” said Ren.As long as these companies can obtain approval from Washington, Ren commented that Huawei will continue to buy in large volumes from them. “It may be the case that they cannot obtain approval quickly. We have ways to go through this transition period. Once approval is granted, we will maintain our normal trade with these US companies and work together to build an information society for humanity. We don’t want to work alone.”In an answer to a direct question about why the US is targeting Huawei, Ren responded: “I don’t know exactly what [those US] politicians are thinking. I think we should not be the target of US-led campaigns just because we are ahead of the US.”The Huawei founder also responded to questions about overall disruptions to the international ICT market. “Europe will not follow in the footsteps of the US, and the majority of US companies are communicating closely with us. We will certainly be able to continue serving our customers. Our mass production capacity is huge, and adding Huawei to the Entity List won’t have a huge impact on us. We are making progress in bidding worldwide.”With regards to Huawei’s own business outlook for 2019, Ren added: “Our growth will slow down, though not by as much as everyone imagines. In the first quarter of this year, our revenue grew 39% over the same period last year. This rate decreased to 25% in April, and may continue decreasing towards the end of this year. But the US ban will not lead to negative growth or harm the development of our industry.”In sectors where Huawei have the most advanced technologies, at least in the 5G sector, Ren added that there “won’t be much impact”. Not just that, but Huawei competitors won’t be able to catch up with it within two to three years.5G standards are widely considered to have a huge impact on society, added Ren. The company appears to be well prepared for the future in terms of technology innovation and  R&D. Huawei has 26 centers of expertise for R&D globally, over 700 mathematicians, 800 physicists, and 120 chemists working at Huawei, according to Ren. He further noted that Huawei have the most 5G standard-essential patents in the world – about 27% of the total.“We have an Institute of Strategic Research, which provides a large amount of funding to well-known professors at top universities around the world. We don’t expect return on this investment. The way we sponsor research is similar to how investment works according to the US Bayh-Dole Act. It’s the universities that benefit from the investment. By doing so, we will work with more scientists researching technologies at different stages,” says Ren.As Reor its three business groups, when asked about where revenue will come from over the long term, Ren doesn’t take the view that the most profitable one is necessarily the most important. “Only the department that is responsible for building network connections will be able to become number one in the world. It is the very department that has come under attacks from the US. I have compared it to a badly damaged aircraft. Actually, we have realized that this department does not face as many difficulties as others because it has been preparing for a long time. Our 5G, optical transmission, and core network technologies are free from the pressure that is being put on this department, and these technologies will be the world leaders for many years to come.”In addressing its latest reputational challenges, Ren concluded that: “We do not seek to solve our reputation issues outside of China through media campaigns. I think we will ultimately need to solve these issues by providing excellent services to our customers. We are very advanced, and our customers will realize this if they start using our services.

Karachi, May 2019: The superstar Faysal Quraishi hosts over an hour-long interactive Ramadan transmission, ‘Salaam Zindagi’ on ARY Zindagi. The actor, producer and host, already known for his philanthropic work continues to highlight social and humanitarian issues through his Ramadan show. The show has a mass following and is credited for making a huge impact in society. The Salam Zindagi host contrary to the clichéd style of hosting highlights and propagates important issues that are not otherwise given the spotlight. Most of the highlighted issues pertain to the everyday problems in the life of a common man. Quraishi has previously touched upon and discussed subjects like ‘Social Media Bullying’, ‘Road Rage’ (often seen during Ramadan), ‘Rights of Minorities’, ‘Gender Equality’ and ‘Tree Plantation’ to name a few.Otherthan highlighting important social issues, Quraishi’s show also engages the audience with a travel documentary report, cooking segment, short skits on human behavior and a LIVE Qawwali performance.  The LIVE show is telecasted every day from 10pm to 12:30 pm on ARY Zindagi.Sarwat Gilani, Yasir Hussain, Sara Bhatti, Sana Askari, Kiran Khan, Ayaz Samoo, Seemi Pasha and a number of other prominent celebrities have appeared as guests. A fair share of other big names from the showbiz industry are expected to appear in the high TRP show. Always using his work to make a positive impact in society, Faysal Quraishi’s Ramadan transmission recently brought about a huge change for the people of Tharparkar. “We have shot a promo of Shan-e-Ramzan at Tharparker and our team is now putting up hand pumps in different areas,” said the star in the first show of the transmission. “It’s a positive show and I want people to start their fast with maximum positivity.”When asked about what he enjoys most about his Ramadan show, Quraishi opines, “we try to keep our Ramadan show very balanced where we encourage people to run the worldly and spiritual life parallel to each other. I love the idea of adding joy and smiles on everyone’s faces. My favorite segment that we’ve kept consistent on the show for some time now is called ‘Insaan Baniye’. In this segment, we talk about how little actions can make a big impact and the overall response has been great so far.” The actor also says that he is really looking forward to put his best possible efforts for the philanthropic endeavors to help the underprivileged strata of the society.Other than the Ramadan show, Faysal Quraishi is also working on a Telethon, details of which will be disclosed at a later date.
