Sportsman in Pakistan always facing lack of support and facilities:Shahzad Baig

Interview : Syed Qalbe Muhammad

Sportsman in Pakistan always facing lack of support and facilities. The nation has lot of talented players but unfortunately they can’t grow well due to weak finicinal support from the family and the negative thinking of the society. The problem in over populated nation is no one give attention to the sports culture in this society.Even though there are few people in rural areas. They support sports and their players from his own finance.Shahzad Baig is one them who is leading sports organizer in Badin and I caught them during my recent visit to Tharparkar. He was born on 30th Dec 1961 started his basic education at Model School Badin.Shahzad was represented Peshawar Board Volleyball team from Kohat Degree College. His father Late Anwar Baig worked at Pakistan Air Force. He was started to organize sports from 1997-98 and also represent Badin at District level.

Shahzad Baig said that people here in Badin taking interest in sports and also crowd are gather here. There is a lot of talented players in our district but we don’t have any access to show our abilities. If some players are given proper chance they don’t get any response on national level.Backward area are always neglected. We need to organize special camp here to find out the talent. We always work on self finance.Special Cricket, Hockey, Football tournaments need to organize in the small cities. We just want PCB,PSB,POA to give some time here and pick few talented and deserving players from interior Sindh so interest will develop and Pakistan will get quality of stars. There is also need to organize coaching course and in the off time if provincial government allow to give some space to groom the talent. The major problem here that we don’t have hospital facility here if some player is injured during the match I personally support his medical expenses. All sports goods we bring from Karachi.Provisional govt try to improve life facility here so sports will improve.Former first class cricketer Sajid Abbasi,Syed Moinuddin,Nadeem Yousuf and Zulfiqar Haider comes here to boost up the moral of our players.Former Captain Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi comes here as a cheif guest.I personally make a table tennis club and few players are coming for pratice. My only aim to give quality of stars to our country which is the big demand of the time.

Only way to improve Pakistan cricket is to pick deserving players:Mian Azmat Hussain and Ansar Javed Toor

Interview :Syed Qalbe Muhammad

Photos : Shahzad Jafri

Mian Azmat Hussain was born on 22nd August 1947. He started his education at St. Paul School and Islamia College. Later on he qualified as a Chartered Accountant from UK. Mian Azmat has been a Vice President for KCCA on several occasions including treasurer. Mian Azmat promoted other games also like Judo, Karate, Tak Wando. Mian is very famous in all over Pakistan regarding his financial and technical support to organize cricket and run one of the most prestigious clubs “Mian Azmat Professional Cricket Club” and gave a lot of super starts to Pakistan Cricket. Mian Azmat Professionals invited players from all over Pakistan to play in the club. The another patron of his club was Ansar Javed Toor who was born on January 04, 1951 started his education in Govt. High School Punjab and B.Sc. from Karachi. He flew for American Air Force subsidiary Civil Air Petrol in USA. These two gentle man also with Naseer Pasha (Manager, Coordinator MAP), the main source for running the club introduced the legends of Cricket in International Arena without his innovations and enthusiasm MAP would have never achieved the greatness it did. We caught them at Karachi Gymkhana and discussed the lot of cricket and tribute his services for this country.

Mian Azmat Hussain said in 1981 we made one cricket club with the help of six founding members, Capt. Amjad Hussain Faizi, Ansar Javed Toor (Faizi),Mian Shoukat Hussain, Capt. Aijaz ul Haque, Ateed Riaz, called Thursday (Jumairati) Cricket Club. We booked KPI ground and started playing cricket. After that we started net practice in our office plot.Former Sports Minister Dr.Muhammad Ali Shah, Dr.Faiz Muhammad Khan, Qazi Shabbir and various other prominent people played in our team as well also supported MAP club. We started Mian Azmat Professional Club. When we didn’t pay any player at that time but we pormate talent for introducing a healthy competition for young cricketers to promote young talent which was provided by GREAT Ishaque Patel (Advisor MAP) with his keen eye and observation. Our only motive was to produce quality cricketers and we succeeded in that. The only way to improve cricket is to pick the right talent without being bias but self centered motivation is destroying Pakistan Cricket. Our selection criteria at all levels is very weak you can imagine that Leg and Offspinners are the backbone of Indo Pak Cricket. If there action was wrong how they come to International Cricket. Umpires skills from grassroots level till top are not satisfactory. The down fall comes to cricket because our legends want to work only for money which incidentally with respect and fame was given to them because of Pakistan . They don’t want to transfer their talent to groom the young generation. Closing of departments is destroying our Cricket Culture. Professional cricketers based on their salaries how can they survive without income. I personally suggest that Prime Minister should ask Cricket Authorities to revert back to Departmental Cricket and put more emphasis on schools, colleges, universities and club cricket. Mian Azmat and A.J. Toor said discrimination with minorities in Cricket is unbearable. Players motivation is only to play for his country. The darkest era of our cricket is that not a single minority player is selected in any region. There is a need of law to pick two talented minority cricketers in the squads of all regions. Stupid commercialism is dangerous for the game. PCB needs to give respect to former cricketers and invite them in all matches so more crowd will come, see and meet their heroes. Mian Azmat Professionals is the pioneer of Karachi Gymkhana Ramzan Tournament but we are not even invited in the prize distribution ceremony anymore. PSL is not a long time beneficial for Pakistan Cricket because we get only few players for this league and still they do not fulfill the expectations, as well as the good talent is being wasted. We need to establish cricket to bring in people like good Administrator Arif Ali Abbasi and good cricketers, Nadeem Yousuf, Sajid Abbasi and so many others. Wrong decision to removed Sarfraz Ahmed from all sorts of crickets at once he should have been removed if necessary slowly, another wrong decision taken by PCB is appointing Misbah Manager & Coach. Why? Don’t we have other professional cricketers in country to hold and accept the responsibilities without being bias.

Gone with the Mushroom Cloud

Aly Rashid

It was 73 years ago when the Mushroom Cloud arose in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and signaled the end of the World War II. It was to this date the most catastrophic use of weaponry and the only time history saw a Nuclear Bomb in action. Ever since that the United Nations acts as the central organ preventing another war of this scale whereas the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) serves as an agreement aiming to prevent anymore nuclear warfare, but does this mean we are completely safe?

Perhaps if the NPT had been free of loopholes or at least followed to the letter, we could have had a somewhat better sense of security. For example, 5 states (namely the United States of America, Russia, France, China and the United Kingdom) still possess ample nuclear stockpiles. While the treaty presents these recognized Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) as aloof from several obligation, one of the core obligations in Article III of the treaty urging for “movement towards general and complete disarmament” is still applicable to them. Despite this, after reducing their stockpiles to certain extent, none of these states show intention to denuclearize further, and states like Russia and the USA still possess over 1000 warheads. Furthermore, the treaty through articles such as Article II and VI not only allows but encourages as one of its “three pillars” that nuclear stockpiles for peaceful purposes such as developing nuclear energy may be traded. Although since this consists of a uranium isotope which cannot be uses for weaponry (U-238), with the advancement of modern technology turning this very enriching this very uranium to U-235 for use in weaponry is not impossible.

If this alone did not establish just how shallow the security we live under was, another fact is that the NPT is not completely universal, even amongst the members of the United Nations. Pakistan and India never signed the NPT whereas as North Korea withdrew from the treaty, as allowed in Article X. All three countries possess nuclear weapons. To make matters worse is the constant tension between Pakistan and India and the rogue nature of North Korea. We also see the matter of Israel, a state whose nuclear intentions have been hidden by powerful nations like the USA, thus leaving us in confusion. The truth is, even now we may be sitting at the brink of nuclear war. We may be sitting a mere 10 seconds away from the loss of millions of lives and destructions of hundreds of cities. It is when one ponders over these thoughts that the words of Albert Einstein come to mind, “I do not know what weapons World War III will be fought with, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”
