Lahore(Cliff News)The Pakistani Academy Selection Committee invites Pakistani filmmakers to submit their films for Oscar consideration in the ‘International Feature Film Award’ category for the 92nd Academy Awards by 15th August 2019 5:00 PM [PST]. This will mark the seventh consecutive submission by the Pakistani Academy Selection Committee having previously submitted “Zinda Bhaag” in 2013, “Dukhtar” in 2014, “MOOR” in 2015, “Mah-e-Mir” in 2016, “Saawan” in 2017 and “Cake” in 2018 to represent the best of Pakistani cinema for award consideration in the ‘International Feature Film’ [previously ‘Foreign Language Film’] category.The Oscar committee for 2019 is chaired by two-time Academy Award and Emmy winning documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and includes Zeba Bakhtiar [Director and Actress], Zarrar Khuhro [Journalist], Zebunnisa Hamid [Assistant Professor of Film Studies], Sarmad Khoosat [Writer, Producer, Director and Actor], Asim Abbasi [Film Director], Rizwan Beyg [Fashion Designer], Jamil Baig [CEO Nueplex Cinemas], Sanam Saeed [Actress, singer and former model] and Hamna Zubair [Journalist].The committee will choose one film as Pakistan’s official submission for the, ‘International Feature Film Award’. ThePakistani Academy Selection Committee will announce its nomination for award consideration in September 2019.The criteria for eligibility is as follows:

  1. The motion picture must be first released in the country submitting it no earlier than October 1, 2018, and no later than September 30, 2019, and be first publicly exhibited for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial motion picture theater for the profit of the producer and exhibitor. Submissions must be in 35mm or 70mm film, or in a 24- or 48-frame progressive scan Digital Cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by 1080 pixels, source image format conforming to ST 428- 1:2006 D-Cinema Distribution Master – Image Characteristics; image compression (if used) conforming to ISO/IEC 15444-1 (JPEG 2000); and image and sound files packaged as Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs) in either “Interop” or “SMPTE DCP” formats. SMPTE DCP refers to SMPTE ST429-2 and related specifications. (Blu-ray format does not meet Digital Cinema requirements.)

 

The audio in a Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is typically 5.1 or 7.1 channels of discrete audio. The minimum for a non-mono configuration of the audio shall be three channels as Left, Center, Right (a Left/Right configuration is not acceptable in a theatrical environment). The audio data shall be formatted in conformance with ST 428-2:2006 D-Cinema Distribution Master – Audio Characteristics and ST 428-3:2006 D-Cinema Distribution Master – Audio Channel Mapping and Channel Labeling.

  1. The film must be advertised and exploited during its theatrical release in a manner considered normal and customary to theatrical feature distribution practices. The film need not have been released in the United States.

 

  • Films that, in any version, receive a nontheatrical public exhibition or distribution before their first qualifying theatrical release will not be eligible for Academy Awards consideration.

 

Nontheatrical public exhibition or distribution includes but is not limited to:

  • Broadcast and cable television
  • PPV/VOD
  • DVD distribution
  • Internet transmission

 

  1. The recording of the original dialogue track as well as the completed picture must be predominantly in a language or languages other than English. Accurate, legible English-language subtitles are required.

 

  1. The submitting country must certify that creative control of the motion picture was largely in the hands of citizens or residents of that country.

 

  1. The International Feature Film Award Executive Committee shall resolve all questions of eligibility and rules.

The Academy Awards, now officially known as The Oscars, are a set of awards given annually for excellence in cinematic achievements. The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit and is one of nine types of Academy Awards. Lahore(Cliff News)Introducing The Zeenat Haroon Rashid Writing Prize for Women named in honour of Zeenat Haroon Rashid (21 Jan 1928 – 8 April 2017), a founding member of the Women’s National Guard at the time of Independence who became a symbol for women’s empowerment in Pakistan.A prize of Rs. 100,000 (1 Lakh) will be awarded annually through a competition for writing in English on the subject of Women and Pakistan. This will be the first time a substantial cash prize will be awarded to an unpublished piece of writing.The competition will be open to all women of Pakistani nationality or Pakistani heritage (with NIC or NICOP) aged 18 and above and entries will be original, previously unpublished works in the form of either Memoir, Polemic, Essay or Short Story of no more than 3000 words. The topic must be central to the theme of Women and Pakistan and the judges will look for a piece of writing with a strong, personal voice.From amongst all entries, the best will be chosen for consideration by a panel of judges drawn from writers, editors and publishers. The panel will then draw up a short-list of 6 from which a winner will be chosen.The 2019 panel of judges include Ameena Sayid, OBE, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, editor and publisher and founder of the Karachi, and Islamabad Literature Festivals and Founder and Director of the Adab Festival Pakistan; Moni Mohsin, author and columnist whose writing has appeared in The Friday Times, The Guardian and the Economist; Irfan Husain, author and columnist for Dawn; Sadia Quraeshi Shepard, internationally acclaimed filmmaker and author; Muneeza Shamsie author, literary journalist, and award-winning anthologist; and Shan Vahidy, a freelance editor working in London who is also the granddaughter of Zeenat Haroon Rashid.The winning entry for The Zeenat Haroon Rashid Writing Prize for Women will be published online, and if appropriate, in a national magazine or newspaper. The writer will be honoured at an event at which the prize will be awarded.The closing date for entries is 15th July 2019 and the winner will be announced later in December 2019.

About Zeenat

Zeenat Haroon Rashid (21 Jan 1928 – 8 April 2017) was the daughter of Sir Abdullah Haroon and the daughter-in-law of Sir Abdur Rashid, the first Chief Justice of Pakistan. She was a young stalwart of the Muslim League and Women’s National Guard at the time of Independence and throughout her life promoted a vision of Pakistani Women as equal partners in the struggle for building a modern Pakistan in accordance with Qaid-e-Azam’s vision. About the Women’s National Guard she said “Jinnah wanted to show people that in Pakistan, women would do things. We were a symbol of progress.”Zeenat became an icon for women’s empowerment in the nascent nation state of Pakistan, when Margaret Bourke-White, the legendary photographer for LIFE Magazine, snapped a photo of her in 1948 practising with the Women’s National Guard.

About the Prize

The ZEENAT HAROON RASHID WRITING PRIZE FOR WOMEN has been set up to honour the memory of Zeenat by her daughter Syra Vahidy who is the principal donor. The prize will be awarded annually in the hope that it works to promote and provide support for women who wish to pursue writing as a career.

Ameena Saiyid recently retired after 30 years as managing director of Oxford University Press (OUP) in Pakistan.
